Summit Background
A Green City is a city designed with consideration of environmental impact, inhabited by people dedicated to minimization of required inputs of energy, water and food, and waste output of heat, air pollution, and water pollution. It is estimated that around 50% of the world's population now lives in cities and urban areas, which brings challenges to the carrying capacity of economy and environment. In order to make green development, design practice, cultural perception and lifestyle must adopt sustainability thinking.
For the next 10-15 years, China will still be in a rapid urbanization development stage, and the level of urbanization will increase average 0.8-1 percent every year. China government is actively implementing green city strategies. Bundle of policies and regulations about green city have been released or will be released soon. Much more money will be invested to urban planning, renewable energy, waste treatment, green building, public transportation etc. With the rapid development of green city, China environmental protection industry value will exceed 1 trillion RMB in 2010 which will take up 7% - 8% of GDP by 2015. Environment protection industry will be pillar industry by 2020.
The summit will provide a platform to bring together international experts and leaders address concerns in the area of urban planning, renewable energy, waste management, green building, public transportation etc. Sustainable solutions and opportunities for cities of the future in China will be discussed.
